My winter break officially ends tomorrow and as school starts for the spring semester I start working again. Although I do not want my break to end, I felt like it was a long break where I spent a lot of time with family, friends, and fishing. The three things I love the most besides the gf who is tops.
I wanted my last weekend of winter break to be a good one so we took a trip to Quincy to see my girlfriend’s dad and explore the great wonder that is Pyramid Lake. We all set out Saturday around mid-morning on an adventure.
Pyramid Lake
Well there isn’t much to say about it except its a big ol’ lake in the middle of the desert. The scenery is pretty amazing as it is one of the last remnants of the ancient ice age Lake Lahontan. Its should definitely be on the bucket list as one of the great destinations for the fly angler.
We explored the town of Sutcliffe and after I purchased my fishing permit from probably the only general store/bar/casino/fishing store/grocery store/restaurant we set out to North Nets.
The beach had some water that was frozen on the shore and the water was very calm for the day. There was still quite a bit of snow out on the hills. Pyramid Lake has literally miles of beach to fish so even on the busiest days it must never get crowded out there. The name of the game is wait for the fish to come to you, so its a game of patience and luck. Maybe you’ll get that 20 pounder or maybe you’ll get nothing. Welcome to the Nevada the state of many gambles.
I forgot my ladder I brought from Chico in Quincy so I spent about 4-5 hours wading near the drop off casting a 15ft sink tip on my switch rod.
There weren’t many hook ups while I was there but I saw a few risers throughout the day. I think I had a bite about 3 hours in but I didn’t set the hook in time. Once the sun came down it got really cold and I called it. My stripping finger was bleeding from stripping line all day in the cold. Totally hardcore. We all had Mexican food afterwards. It was good.
Needless to say I will be back. Most likely when the weather gets warmer as I now know the name of the game. Its a beautiful lake and feels very tranquil. The locals are extremely friendly and the fisherman are super respectful. I had a guy move over a bit to give me more room to fish without even asking. He probably knew I didn’t know what the hell I was doing and was trying to get out of my way haha.
Pyramid Lake I will be back and next time I will catch a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.
Thats me way out there |
